Dad and I went to see this last night, and you know what? I really didn't like it.

No, I really didn't, and neither did he. Of course, the costumes were fantastic, and the sets were very cleverly done, (geez, you'd want to be sitting in the stalls!) but for some reason I didn't like much of the rest. I strongly disliked the new songs, thought the 'passing the time' dances were just silly (particularly during 'can you see the love tonight?', as last time I checked, lions couldn't float in mid-air) and was VERY disappointed about the final fight scene between Simba and Scar. And please don't get me started on the extra storyline with Nala rejecting Scar and having to flee. I swear, the only reason they put that in was to use the line about the car in the hat coming back.
Okay, there wasn't much music in the original film, but I thought 'The Morning Report' looked and sounded like it had been ripped from The Boy From Oz. (We also had a rather painful over-acter in young Simba, but that's a separate issue.) And I just don't think the rest of the music fit. It's been years since I saw the film, so I don't think I was particularly badly contaminated by that, but it was so obvious what was new, having a much stronger African flavour than the Rice/John stuff.
When you've got a rampantly successful film with a storyline that both adults and kids love, with beautiful music that sold (as I recall) superbly well - why in the love of the theatre Gods do you have to stuff it up?!

lion king
My sister and I went to Sydney to see Lion King when it first opened and we were pretty much the only people in the theatre who did not think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I didn't see the point of a lot of the 'extra' stuff they put in. Sure the costumes and scenery were spectacular but that only lasted the first ten minutes of each act.
We saw it from front row of dress circle which, although it didn't get the aisle work that stalls got, did get some flying birds and animals after interval which thrilled the kids sitting around us (and us too, briefly, if the truth be told).
Am now inspired to watch dvd again.
Re: lion king
And does the DVD have much extra stuff? I may borrow it from the video library to watch, if so.
