Dad and I went to see this last night, and you know what? I really didn't like it.

*waits for brick-bats and other paraphenalia to come in my direction*

No, I really didn't, and neither did he. Of course, the costumes were fantastic, and the sets were very cleverly done, (geez, you'd want to be sitting in the stalls!) but for some reason I didn't like much of the rest. I strongly disliked the new songs, thought the 'passing the time' dances were just silly (particularly during 'can you see the love tonight?', as last time I checked, lions couldn't float in mid-air) and was VERY disappointed about the final fight scene between Simba and Scar. And please don't get me started on the extra storyline with Nala rejecting Scar and having to flee. I swear, the only reason they put that in was to use the line about the car in the hat coming back.

Okay, there wasn't much music in the original film, but I thought 'The Morning Report' looked and sounded like it had been ripped from The Boy From Oz. (We also had a rather painful over-acter in young Simba, but that's a separate issue.) And I just don't think the rest of the music fit. It's been years since I saw the film, so I don't think I was particularly badly contaminated by that, but it was so obvious what was new, having a much stronger African flavour than the Rice/John stuff.

When you've got a rampantly successful film with a storyline that both adults and kids love, with beautiful music that sold (as I recall) superbly well - why in the love of the theatre Gods do you have to stuff it up?!

*fumes*
Mood:: 'angry' angry
Music:: The (Real) Lion King (animated film)

*prepares to throw* ;) Actually I'm not, because on the whole I agree with you. I would like to see it again, mainly because I was at the back of the gods when I saw it and I'd like to see it from a better seat. I can imagine that kids would find it fascinating, because I do think the costumes and sets are amazing, but there's not much there for adults in terms of plot, which is a shame because providing for all ages is something Disney does well in the films. I do like some of the new music though - I like the African style of it but then I've never seen the original film!

*lol* And you even have a Disney icon for me! If you go again, definitely sit in the stalls, because the aisles get quite a work-out. There were a lot of kids at the show, but most of them were asleep by the end. *g* And the original film is CUTE!

Ah, I was at a matinee, so the kids were all wide awake and rather noisy! I'd also like to see a better cast. The London cast is notoriously bad at the moment, and has been for the past few years (cause none of them ever leave! :)). I'm sure I'll see it again someday. And i do have the film on DVD, I just haven't watched it yet!

Hmm, noisy kids would be a problem. Our cast was very good, although the mix of accents is rather jarring (and the adult Simba was soooo stilted!). Fingers crossed the London cast will eventually improve somehow and I hope you enjoy it if/when you see it again. And you should watch the DVD - it's cute!

I do so agree with you.

My sister and I went to Sydney to see Lion King when it first opened and we were pretty much the only people in the theatre who did not think it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I didn't see the point of a lot of the 'extra' stuff they put in. Sure the costumes and scenery were spectacular but that only lasted the first ten minutes of each act.

We saw it from front row of dress circle which, although it didn't get the aisle work that stalls got, did get some flying birds and animals after interval which thrilled the kids sitting around us (and us too, briefly, if the truth be told).

Am now inspired to watch dvd again.

I'm so glad it's not just me! *g*

And does the DVD have much extra stuff? I may borrow it from the video library to watch, if so.
