Today was Innsbruck day! Yay! It was also astonishingly trouble-free, apart from the fact that the bus I meant to catch didn’t come, so I was an hour later than I expected setting off, and I missed the train I’d meant to catch home and had to wait for the next one. Just when do I get my nice doctor (or even a decent-looking music master or other professional single man) to help me out of these sticky situations? Hrmph!
Anyway, Innsbruck was absolutely gorgeous. I’ve been very, very lucky with the weather and today was another beautiful day (although it has clouded over considerably here at the Achensee). I had already seen parts of Innsbruck during my bus ride to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, including the Hotel Europe (where Dick, Madge, Jo and Grizel stayed when they first arrived in Austria) so that gave me a good starting point. I had planned to see the Triumphal Arch first, work my way up along the Maria-Theresien-strasse and across the Inn, but the best laid plans…
Basically, I misjudged the location of the Hotel Europe (and myself) and ended up doing the city in the exact opposite direction from the one I’d intended. (Gee, and you don’t even look surprised! Can’t imagine why…) Instead, I went along to the Museumstrasse, so loved by Grizel Cochrane, and along to the Volkskunstmuseum and the Hofkirche. These are definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in Innsbruck, particularly the Church!
I had my lunch in the Hofgarten next to the Church (I’ve been taking meat, rolls and cheese from the hotel each day) and then crossed the Inn (major river through Innsbruck) to the St. Nicholas Church where Bernhilda got married (Eustacia). It’s a beautiful building and gorgeously decorated, as well as being surprisingly large inside. It’s only a short stroll from the Mariahilfe, a suburb of Innsbruck across the river from the main tourist centre. I didn’t spend much time in Mariahilfe, as we are not told the exact location of the Mensch home and I would never have found it! Instead, I headed back into the tourist section of town.
My next stop was the Golden Roof, a gorgeous building at the head of the Maria-Theresien-Strasse with a balcony decorated in gold. I joined the other tourists there to take photos and then headed down the Maria-Theresien-Strasse towards the Triumphal Arch (more photos) before going to the train station and heading home. Not a particularly exciting day (at least compared to yesterday) but very Chalet Schoolish!!!
