First, I'm astonished that there are no comments on my flist from [livejournal.com profile] sangerin expressing her sheer delight that Serena Williams has been given the Royal Order of the Mitten from the Open. Are you not well, hun?

Second, I am now a Rotarian (well, as of Wednesday, but haven't had the energy to post since then). This is very exciting for me, but may not mean a lot to you. Briefly, Rotary is a service organisation that raises money for charities and other needy groups by all sorts of means (e.g. Saturday and Sunday markets, Art shows, etc.). You can't just join this group, you have to be asked, so I must have hidden my true nature for long enough for them to be sucked in. *veg*

Third, I am looking for somewhere to hide for the next week. This is because I hate and detest Melbourne weather, as these are the high temperatures for the next week:
Saturday (today): 36
Sunday: 41
Monday: 28
Tuesday: 27
Wednesday: 30
Thursday: 32
Friday: 28

*sobs bitterly then throws temper tanty* I want snooo-oooow!
Mood:: 'hot' hot

That would be because a) I was out last night and so haven't yet gleefully watched the match, b) I've only just gotten up, and c) I'm not well, and once I've made myself a cup of tea, I'm going back to bed.

Congrats re Rotary!

Ah, I shall listen to shrieks from the north when you do then. And *huggles* about you not feeling well. Are you going to a doctor or is it just general yukkiness?

I think it's side effects from the Yellow Fever vaccination I had this week.

*more huggles* Very sorry to hear that.

Congrats on Rotary. I know a bit about them, having (unsuccessfully) applied twice for scholarships.

Thanks. And it's a shame you didn't get the scholarships - which ones were they?

posted by [identity profile] pisica.livejournal.com at 09:38pm on 20/01/2006
Just the one-year ones - although not getting it the first time I applied directly led me to making an application for a Fulbright, which I *did* get, so that's probably why I still think of Rotary fondly. :)

I'm very glad to hear you got something. *hugs*

Me too. :)

And having met some Rotary scholars during my first year here, I was fine with not having won one, because frankly, I had both the finances and the motivation to come overseas by myself. Whereas one scholar I knew had never been out of the states, had grown up so poor that you ate what was on the table because there was nothing else in the house to eat, and had entered beauty pageants to win scholarships to fund her college education (I presume she won other scholarships as well). And I was thinking, *she* is the type of person who deserves a Rotary scholarship - determined, intelligent, and needing that boost that the scholarship could provide.

Good for her! That is the benefit to things like this - helping people who wouldn't otherwise get it. But I am still glad you got something, as it would have been awful if you'd missed out altogether. *huggles you*

It was *very* cold at the bus stop tonight, but when I think that the alternative could have been 41 degrees, I think I'll keep the cold....

Hurrah for Serena going out! I only follow tennis during Wimbledon, due to lack of ability to keep track of any tornament which isn't just shown all day on BBC1/2, but she and Venus really annoy me.

And congrats on the Rotary invite :)

*whimper* Can you send me some snow or something? I'll provide the esky.

And definite hurrahs about Serena - she is (IMHO) the better of the two sisters, but it's not a much better 'better'.

And thanks. *hugs*

We have no snow, just biting winds. Apparently the recent mild spell is ending, and next week we are getting weather from Russia. I shall tell myself that it is better than too hot.

And what's esky?

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 08:56pm on 21/01/2006
*is very, very jealous, no matter how cold it gets*

An esky is a big (can be small) plastic box that is insulated and you fill it with ice and drinks. Very handy for picnics, BBQs and when the fridge dies (guess which reason we've used it for most recently ;-).

posted by [identity profile] minniemoll.livejournal.com at 10:56pm on 21/01/2006
Ah. We just call it a cool box, well, I do, anyway. Is esky short for something?

It was warmer today, just nice to be out in the garden in a fleece and wooly hat and do some tidying up ready for spring. But I'm sure you didn't want to hear that *vbg*

I do sympathise really, I wilt in this country when it's hot, and that tends to be anything over about 22. I can't begin to imagine 41 degrees.

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 11:03pm on 21/01/2006
Apparently it's short for eskimo - I didn't know you could store drinks in an eskimo, but you live and learn. *snicker*

And they've given us a new prediction - it will now be 43 degrees. Waaaaah!

Ask a silly question......

Eeeeeeek!!!!! to 43 degrees. I suggest you dig a very deep hole and then get in it.

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 11:22pm on 21/01/2006
*lol* Quite!

And you do see the problem with the hole, don't you? I'd have to 1) go outside and 2) dig. As it's already in the mid 30s, I'm afraid I have no plans to do either! Even making the bed seems like too much effort at the moment!

Um, yes, you have a point. How about running a cold bath and getting a supply of books?

Ooh, you do make tempting suggestions! It's only 11am at the moment, but by this afternoon, I may well just do that!

Congrats. Yay you!

And here. Have my weather. Please.

If there was a way to get there without the long flight, I would be on your doorstep in an instant! And thank you! *dances in multi-coloured storm*

Firstly - don't follow tennis much, my mind is still stuck in Navratilova days 8-)
Secondly - Congratulations!

Thirdly - yes, our "mild" spell is ending and the Siberian weather is coming back. My s-i-l, on the other hand, says "we didn't go swimming at Anglesey, it's only 30 degrees" !!! Has she forgotten she's originally British? We'd go to the beach anything over 25!

Wondering idly if there's a way to push all weather into the middle, mix it up and average it out so we're all comfortable...

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 09:05pm on 21/01/2006
I think a weather mixer is a wonderful idea. Either that or force the people who like hot weather to stay in the hot parts and leave a cool/cold area for the rest of us.

posted by [identity profile] geneticallydead.livejournal.com at 10:00am on 21/01/2006
Apparently, it hit 40 just before 5pm today. And tomorrow (Sunday) has an updated forecast of 43.

Woo!

I like it. I know. I'm weird that way.

*whimper* I hate weather. And it's going to be 40 degrees on Wed. and Thur. (or Thur. and Fri., can't remember which). Mind, you're not allowed to whine that it's too hot if it goes about 43, which the experts are saying it will, or I shall get very grumpy with you, you strange being.

I could offer cold, rainy, windy, some snow and hail in between and all in all ugly weather in Hamburg - come and join if you're still interested.
And don't say later I didn't warn you about lingering depression concerning that weather. Nope, I won't take the blame on that.

(Though admittedly, I wouldn't wanna exchange my weather for your evil sticky-wet hottness)

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 09:07pm on 21/01/2006
I would be there in a shot if there wasn't a 24-hour flight between us! And I never get depressed in cold weather - or are you saying you do?

posted by [identity profile] icd.livejournal.com at 08:12am on 22/01/2006
Well, obviously this year I do - bad time. I think it's the continuous changing.
I have no problem with cold for days or even rainy for days (though that's not really my fav.) but this year it goes up and down like a jojo.
Two days ago we had like -3°, then yesterday we had good 6ish plus and then today I wake up to -7°.
I think that's what's getting to me right now. *sighs*
At least today there's sun - freaking clod but sunny.

*huggles* Have you thought of buying yourself a light box? That might help.

Hi KB!

I'll gladly take some heat... we've been fluctuation between freezing and spring-like weather, but man, the wind yesterday was BRUTAL!

My poor car was getting blown all over the road, the gusts were just that strong. As I was leaving for work, I saw shingles - parts of someone's roof, out on the main road. That just shows how hard the wind was blowing - it was ripping shingles off!

Eskie = cooler. Took me a few, but I figured out what you were talking about. At first I was like "Eskimo? She's wanting a guy?" *g*

As for the Rotary group - you sure fooled them! *laugh* Now you just have to get them to support some fandom projects. *g*

Okay, time to go back to work for a couple more hours tonight...

Take care!

Oh, you can have it with pleasure! It was only 38 today. Only?!?!?! You may keep the wind, though, as that sounds less pleasant than the cold, crisp, still weather I love best.

I wouldn't mind an Eskimo if he was cute...

And I did trick them nicely, didn't I? Bwahahaha!
