Those who follow my adventures may remember me talking about feeling ill and generally pants. If not, please feel free to remind yourself here and at various intervals since then. Well, I had a CT scan two weeks ago, which was clear (thankfully) and today I went to see a neurologist. The result of that was that I now have a diagnosis. I'm suffering from vestibular neuronitis. Basically, it's to do with the inner ear. One of the vestibular nerves leading to my brain (those are the ones that send the 'I'm standing up okay and everything's find down this end, thanks' messages) are being squeezed by inflammation in the surrounding tissue. As a result, they're actually sending 'oh, God, help, I think I'm going to die here' messages, which my brain somehow interprets as 'oh, God, I'm falling over and thus I should be suffering badly from vertigo and general crappiness, so let's just all indulge in that for a few moments shall we? Jolly good!' feelings and shares them with the rest of my body. Hence me feeling like I'm about to keel over at odd intervals.

The bad news is that there is not a lot I can do about it. Eventually my brain will learn to ignore what my neurologist fondly called the 'crap' it is receiving from my squashed nerves and I won't get vertigo, etc., anymore. Until then, I just have to keep moving as much as I can and give in when I feel really bad. Which I think is good news... :-/

Oh, and I have to have an MRI on Friday, just to check it's only a virus that's causing the inflammation around the vestibular nerve, and not, say, a tumor. But as there was nothing on the CT, I'm not worried about it, and neither is my neurologist. So yay for that.

Okay, back to your regular scheduled 'Peace publication' party! *puts on party hat again*

*hugs* at least you understand why now. For me that is often the worst of it. Will be thinking of you, cause it's not a nice feeling.

Ok, then party, sure, lets get on with it then! *turns up the music a little*

~hugs~ Freel better, dear. ~makes nice cups of tea and prescribes watcheing silly comedy on tv~

Diagnoses really do help, emotionally at least.

Ooh, what a sensible suggestion! Right after I finish my thesis chapter...

I agree about diagnoses making one feel strangely better even though the symptoms haven't changed yet.

*Hugs*

Hope your brain is super-efficient and gets used to the signals in no time at all!

I think you might be right about the diagnosis. And fingers crossed (just the wires which seem to be crossed at present *g*).

eek, much sympathy.

I find it irritating enough to go through periods when I faint on standing up on a regular basis (I'm in one now, which has reminded me how frustrating it is) so I don't like to think about what it'd be like to feel like that at random times anyway - and probably worse.

But yay for peace publication! *is awaiting her copy impatiently*

It's certainly not fun, but hopefully it will go away soon...

*lol* How were you spelling it?

I was mostly avoiding spelling it. But I'm interested to see how one does spell it.

Hope your brain gets the message soon...maybe we should all come and tell your brain to stop listening to those silly messages, would your health service pay for us to do so do you think? *g*

Thanks for the update, will be thinking of you.

MRI's are noisey! Sounds like lots of guns being fired, but not in a scary way, just makes you want to shove cotton wool in your ears! Unless you're like me and get claustrophobic and get told by your scanner person to "stop moving please Kathryn, we can't do the imaging" ... me, "I'm not moving!"... "you're shaking too much, stop it!" *shrugs* It wasn't my fault!

You might get lucky KB, and just have your head put in, rather than your whole body :D Either way - hope it goes ok!

Likewise, I hope the inflammation sorts itself out soon so that you can feel better :)

Ooh, what a good idea! I wonder if Medicare would cover the cost of that...?

Glad you have a diagnosis - I had a similar problem when I had an infection that caused me to lose my balance and kept feeling I was falling over - it cleared up, but in the meantime I was prescribed some travel sickness pills, which helped with the balance problem. *hugs*
Hope the MRI goes ok

Just out of interest, how long did it take to clear up?

posted by [identity profile] b-liz.livejournal.com at 12:35am on 16/11/2005
It was about 6 weeks I think - I definitely remember not having driving lessons for that long 'cos if I looked 'right, left, right' my head went 'wheeeeeeeeeeeeee' and not in a good way! Yours sounds like it's been going on for longer than that, and I guess it could be the sort of thing that varies from person to person. But hope yours clears up soon *hugs*

Hmm, well mine started at the end of August, so that's almost three months. 0_0 But I get that 'wheeeeeeee' feeling if I nod, even on a good day, so I know exactly what you mean.

I'm glad it's something that will improve, and not something life-threatening. But it still sounds like a wretched nuisance. ::hugs:: Feel better soon.

Out of curiousity, why aren't they going to give you drugs to make the inflammation go away?

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 04:57am on 16/11/2005
Honestly, I'm not sure, but perhaps they've tried and it hasn't worked for other people. The drugs they could give me would only help with the side-effects and would apparently make me sleepy, which I hate!

Ewww. Crappy side effects are teh suckors.

Maybe you should ask the doc next time? Be like, Hey, why am I not getting something to just make the inflammation go away?

I'm sorry to hear that. I have found me a new neurologist. My old one would not listen to me. I hope things turn out for you. I know what it like not to feel good.
