I do have photos from today, but sadly I left my camera cable in the car and I'm in my PJs so they will have to wait.

I spent the morning visiting the following towns: Foveran, Fyvie, Inverurie, Echt.

Any guesses what these towns have in common?

No?

Okay, they are places from which distant relatives of mine have come (at least on my father's side). I enjoyed the chance to look around the churchyards, although I have visited the latter two before. I have one more place of this type to visit in a few days.

In the afternoon I went to St Andrews and visited the remains of the Castle and Cathedral there. Incredible stuff. There is something amazing about a ruin like that.

Tonight I'm in Dunfermline, looking forward to visiting the Palace tomorrow before heading for Stirling and Bannockburn. Hurrah for Scottish history!

I'm so incredibly impressed that you're doing all this. I've never managed to move myself that far north because I get nervy about long drives and getting lost, and I'd love to see Stirling and Bannockburn! Enjoy :-).

Thank you! I love it actually, and I highly recommend you try it. You could do the trip with someone else if you're nervous about the journey. Not that I blame you for it, but it does seem to be a common thing in England that people hate driving longer than about 20 mins.

Takes for ever to drive anywhere round here because of the traffic and all the lights! It always amazes me when I'm abroad and there are areas with open space and No Traffic :-).

Maybe I've been lucky, but traffic has been very light for me so far.

Might want to check the Bannockburn website. We were there in November - the heritage centre was closed for demolition and the temporary one had not yet opened.

There was fencing etc blocking access to the battlefield. We got some photos through the building site & then retired to the pub next door for lunch.

Thanks, I did drive past the hole in the ground that was the heritage centre, and with no sign of a temporary/new one. I went past there early and then on to a wonderful four hours at Stirling. Luckily I visited Robert the Bruce when I was in Scotland 2.5 years ago, so not much missed. Perhaps they will have built the new one when I come back to Scotland to visit Dunfermline some point in the future.

How far West are you coming in your Scottish wanderings? I'm living over near Loch Lomond these days.

Sadly I've been as far west as I planned in my drive from Hereford to Aberdeen. Maybe we can meet up next time.
