Well, thank you, LJ, that's been generally useless!

So, what have I been up to for the past four days? Honestly, mostly travel. I am now in the UK and have left Austria behind. On my last full day there (Dec 31) I went around Pertisau seeing it all, taking photos, etc. The wonderful part came at midnight when every hotel, pension, gasthof, etc set off their fireworks at midnight so for about 20 mins the entire lakeside was just a huge burst of colour.

Welcome, 2013!

Jan 1 was a day of travelling - bus to the station, train to the airport, plane, then more buses. Luckily all the connections worked and I arrived safely at my hotel.

Jan 2 gave me the joy of picking up my hire car - no more schlepping around on foot! - and headed off for lunch with the lovely ladies behind Girls Gone By Publishers. Later that evening I headed to the house of my Chalet School editor, who had kindly invited me to stay. All in all, it was a very book-y day.

Jan 3 (today) has been no less so! I went first to Hay-on-Wye, which is Britain's Booktown, and then in Hereford. The latter is, of course, the setting for about half of the British-era Chalet books. I only arrived here at about 3pm, but went and did the walked version of the journey described in Highland Twins. I am also staying in the Green Dragon (called the Golden Dragon in Three Goes) so I am thoroughly immersed.

And that's that! Tomorrow I head into Scotland. I'm hoping to drive from Hereford to Aberdeen, which is almost 500 miles. The AA route planner predicts this will take almost 9 nine hours. People I have spoken to say it will take more than 10. We'll see. I don't feel too bad about it, but I could always stay in Glasgow (only 350 miles) for a night instead, although that will mean a lot of driving on Saturday instead.

We'll see...

See how you go on with the traffic and so on, but that's a hell of a journey to do in one day. The M6 can be very busy, and once you're off the motorway it can be hard going. Sorry, not trying to put you off, LOL, but if it were me I'd be stopping overnight somewhere.

You're very brave - I'd love to see the Highlands but I won't drive there from Manchester, which is a fair bit nearer than Hereford!

Just see how you go. If you're heading off in the morning, you should be past the busy areas well before the Friday afternoon traffic gets going, and with schools not yet being back it should be quieter than normal. Good luck!

Thank you for all that information! I plan to leave at or before 8am, which will hopefully avoid too much of a Friday afternoon problem, but I will definitely keep the rest in mind.

Hope it goes OK :-).

I stayed at the Green Dragon when I went to Hereford as well. I wonder how many CS fans they get there in an average year!

*lol* Probably a lot. The old girl is showing her age a bit though, isn't she?

For what it's worth, my parents regularly (as in, my mother used to make the return journey once a month!) drive from Essex to the Highlands in a day, which is some 140 miles more than the journey you're wanting to do. It's certainly do-able!

I don't know whether this is likely to be a problem at any point on the road to Aberdeen, but one thing we have always been warned about is the large number of deer that like to prance into the road at certain points on the road between Inverness and Gairloch. We - on advice of the locals - avoid that road at sunset so as not to write off car and deer both!

Glad to hear I'm not the only mad one. ;-)

Thanks so much for the heads up!

Good luck with the drive tomorrow. At least you should avoid the M6 crawl passed Birmingham (always loads of fun!). You should make it easily without an overnight stay (unless some flood waters get you, of course). :D

Here's hoping! I will report tomorrow evening on my success or otherwise. *g*

Reading about your travels is only making me more excited about my own upcoming trip! While it's still 8 months away, I am looking at airfares and B&Bs and train passes. Eek!

Very glad to hear it! You can never plan too much!

Hope your journey goes to plan. Just to warn you that the "motorways" here in Scotland stop being 3-laned pretty much after Glasgow so can be much slower if busy. And there are lots of speed cameras on the Aberdeen road (if you're driving on the A90) so you're stuck at 50mph for a fair bit. Give me a shout if you're in Edinburgh though!

Thanks so much! I will certainly keep an eye out for that.

I am basing myself in Edinburgh for a few days, but am mostly doing excursions out of it. I will let you know if I have a few spare hours though!
