I found this from fandom_wank via [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants.

Apparently, Anne Rice has decided to tell the story of Jesus Christ's early years in "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt"

I invite you to consider just this sentence for a moment:

"But in humility, I have attempted something transformative which we writers dare to call a miracle in the imperfect human idiom we possess."

There are other gems, but for that you must click on the link and then read the letter that is linked there. (And yes, I nearly went off into 'holier than thou' speak, but managed to avoid it with a great force of will...)

And yes, this is the author who has this to say on the subject of fan fiction:

"I do not allow fan fiction.

The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters.

It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes."

As has been mentioned by a number of people, there is quite a large Bible-fic community out there, who will presumably now be told that, although they were there first, everything biblical is now Anne Rice's department. I can only imagine priests will have to get her permission before they can read the Bible in Church on Sundays.

Could someone please hand me something sharp and pointy? RTW, I need you!

Curse her for an evil plagiarist! Why doesn't she write her own original story with her own original only-begotten saviour??!

You're forgetting, dear - that would require thought!

interesting. i woudl consider fanfics to be a thing authors would love, that people love their stuff soo much, they want to write more... funny

Maybe she's worried someone will write 'her' characters better than she does... *snicker*

OK, I was perusing your journal reading fic, and I came across this and about gagged. A very good friend of mine just got into an email debate with her over her renouncement of any kind of "dark" writing, but this takes the bloody cake.

I'm sorry, Mrs Rice, but Jesus isn't your personal property.

More to the point, there is not a damn thing she can do in this world to erase the works which founded her success as an author. I have no quarrel with her personal beliefs, but give me a damn break. You can't write the Sleeping Beauty series and turn around years later and claim personal ownership of Jesus.

I am just going to read some Charlaine Harris and concentrate on not punching something.

Dammit, see, I was just looking for some Doctor/Donna good times, and now I ended up writing a little missive to the aforementioned author about how you can have faith and enjoying reading about vampires and sex and everything else. I guess I should say thanks for the motivation. ;-)
