Of course, I don't know about the Sale of Work stuff, but I have updates on the others.

Rescue still hasn't arrived. I contacted Jonkers Bookshop, who are going to chase it at their end, and if it doesn't appear, they will reimburse me the full amount. I'm REALLY impressed by that and would use them again, despite their high prices.

Maris of Glenside didn't quite live up to expectations in terms of the b&w pics I was hoping for, but never mind. The cover is in great nick and that's the main thing. The story is pretty pathetic though...

The Ebay complaint got me nowhere, as the DVD was under 25 Euro, so no refund. I found out that the creep who sold it to me is not a registered user, so I don't even have the satisfaction of writing negative feedback for him. *le sigh* Just avoid top_modelle like the plague, folks!

I suspect the other book has arrived.

And I just bought another one... *blush* (Wrong CS in mint dustwrapper and frontispiece from Helen Barlow, who is going to send it airmail even though I only paid for land. Nice lady. *pats*)

I suspect the other book has arrived.

It has!

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to reading this... (and counting how many people would need to be deleted from the cover...)

*lol* No worries. This is what prompted me to buy it:

I think the correspondence about Jo and Robin's trip to India has largely ceased, but I wonder if anyone has come across Keep Troth by Florence M. Knight. My copy was published in 1951, but the cover shows clothes in the style of the 1930s. It is set in a boarding school in the hill country of India and starts with a description of the journey by train from the plains. Setting off from a beautiful station, the seats running the length of the carriage and used as bunks, with another bunk above, then climbing by steep roads in coaches high into then mountains - this may sound familiar, but the Chalet School never had to argue their way past buffalo carts. I half expected the school itself to be very pukkah and snobbish, but in fact the book is intended to carry a Christian message. The school is mixed both as to sexes and races and one difficulty the main character, Elaine, has is that she makes friends with an Indian girl, Mehra, but knows she is unlikely to meet her again out of school since Elaine comes from a quiet suburb and Mehra from a wealthy, fashionable area. It would have been fascinating to see whether EBD would have picked up the same aspects of life in India as Florence Knight.

So what's the cover look like?

You know my powers of description aren't what they might be...

The foreground is three girls, one in a topi (Dr Livingstone-style hat) who I think is supposed to be Elaine, holding the hand of a smaller girl (Dorothy, from what I've read of the first chapter). On the other side of Elaine is a girl with dark hair and is possibly supposed to have darker skin and be Mehra.

Behind them is a house with a broad veranda that takes up about two-thirds of the cover, coming from the spine. On the veranda is someone who is definitely a teacher, and two more schoolgirls - one sitting, one standing and waving to a friend below. There are three schoolgirls between the house and the Elaine-Dorothy-Mehra grouping, two of which are non-descript, the third, to the far right, with a very sour expression on her face.

Behind the house the house there are hills dotted with other buildings, stretching up to snow-capped mountains in the background. On the spine, an Indian servant (complete with turban, and looking more like someone out of the Arabian Nights) is carrying a suitcase on his shoulder.

The more I think about it, there are too many changes that would need to be made, but it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Hmm, I don't know. The three girls could be Jo, Robin and possibly Robin's friend (no names in case others haven't read it).

The teacher could either be Jo again or even Dacia. The girls group of schoolgirls seem to be to be Maria P. and the other girls at the school. I think it would certainly be worth offering as a possible cover if/when India is accepted, as they wouldn't want to use the Abbey covers.

You and Avril are the only people who've read the whole thing.

Before I worked out that the third girl was Mehra, I was thinking that if they made her hair blonde and fixed up the expression a little, she could be Dacia.

But now that I think about it... the teacher could be Jo, the threesome in the foreground could be Robin and friend, and one of the little ones. Take out the four non-descript characters and leave sulky on the edge to be Maria.

Yes, there are still distinct social possibilities in this book's profile. *g*

Helen Barlow *is* nice....I bought a lovely copy of Seven Scamps from her once. (That was before GGBP announced they would republish the La Rochelles...)

Have you *read* Rescue, and are just waiting to own your very own proper book copy? Because if it's just that you want to read it, or want a hard copy but a photocopy would do, well, I have a photocopy I could run through for you.... *thinks* ....This is Rescue as in Jo to the we're talking about, right?
