Characters: Donna and the Doctor
Disclaimer: Still wishing and hoping they might be mine, but to no avail.
Spoilers: Everything up to the end of Season 4.
Summary: Donna has news for the Doctor...
Chapter VII
The Doctor laughs as Elizabeth toddles eagerly across the floor and tumbles into his outstretched arms.
“Your mummy did that once, too, and it was all my fault,” he confides to Elizabeth as her arms wriggle around his neck.
The remembrance of that terrible day – which had been so wonderful for such a few glorious moments – wipes the smile off his face, and only the sight of Donna, busy at the stove as he enters the kitchen, can lighten his mood.
He seats Elizabeth in her highchair and then crosses the room to wrap his arm around her waist in an almost desperate embrace.
“Oh, I know that feeling,” Donna says without looking up. “That’s the gloomy, miserable hug. What are you moping about, Spaceman?”
“Is that ready?” he asks, ignoring the question and pointing at the baby food she’s warming in the saucepan.
“Mmm-hmm.” She fishes out the jar, opens it and spoons the food into a bowl, which she presents to Elizabeth, along with her plastic spoon.
The little girl attacks her meal with the same enthusiasm that she tackles everything, and is soon as wearing as much of her meal as she’s eaten. The Doctor can’t help smiling at the mess, his mood lightening as he goes to get a damp cloth.
He gently cleans his daughter’s face and then feels Donna grab his arm as he’s about to take the cloth back to the sink.
“So, misery, what’s wrong?”
He smiles and kisses her. “Nothing now.”
