Chapter III

Five months old and she looks more like his fifth self than his first, right down to the straight, limp hair. He’s at least relieved that it’s still ginger.

“So at eleven months you’ll know what you’re going to look like next?” Donna teases him one day when they realize what’s happening.

“It’s weird,” he tells her. “Completely bizarre.”

“I’m her mother, I am aware of that,” she retorts, grabbing her daughter’s hand as Elizabeth aims it – and the rusted bolt she’s picked up from her father’s work on the TARDIS console – at her face. “God, she’s just like you,” Donna complains, rolling her eyes and moving the bolt out of the way. “Everything goes straight into her mouth!”

“Best way to check if it’s all right, tasting it,” he teases.

“Yeah, and she’ll get lockjaw,” comes the sharp reply, but then her eyes sparkle and she offers it to him. “Although – why don’t you try it first, ‘daddy’?”

“Okay, okay,” he retorts, rolling his eyes. “I get it. Shutting up now.”

They both sit in silence, watching Elizabeth stare up at the TARDIS core, her blue eyes looking somewhat green as she gazes at the illuminated section of the console, babbling to herself in nonsensical syllables.

“I keep waiting for the TARDIS to translate them for me into something I can understand,” Donna remarks.

“You seem pretty good at knowing what she wants anyway,” he says, affectionately nudging her shoulder. “I always knew you’d be a great mum, Donna.”
