Or even the occasional visitor. I need a recommendation for a hotel. Must-haves are ensuite, tv in each room and internet access. Clean would be good. Comfortable bed would be a bonus. Reasonable price a must and near a tube station very handy indeed.

Am I asking the impossible?

A few questions:

What counts as a reasonable price (I don't know what the exchange rate is like!)?

Do you want free internet access, or is payg acceptable?

What sort of areas do you want to be near?

When would this be for, roughly?

*lol* Fair questions.

I was hoping not to pay more than 70-80 pounds per night, but as I'm going in June/July this might be unreasonable. The exchange rate at the moment is about 50p to AU$1.

PAYG is fine, although free is always nice! *g*

I'd been looking around Earl's Court, but would prefer a tube stop on the line to Heathrow so I don't have to lug a suitcase up and down stairs.

And it would be for 7 nights.

Two thoughts I have are:

The YHA have a hostel in Earls Court, and they do private rooms for about £55 (plus £3 per night if you're not a member). I think they have wi-fi (extra cost though - but then most hotels will be), but not sure about TV in rooms (though there is a lounge). Not quite what you're looking for, but an option you might consider if you can't find exactly what you want.

Travelodges are a mixed bag - pretty much very basic identikit hotels used for low-level business travel, but sometimes you can get a deal (they have £9 booking if you're enough in advance, but I think you're going too soon to benefit from that. But often they're about £75 anyway - which is in your budget). I recently stayed in the Southwark one, which is new and so much less shabby - rather nice, actually! It is right by Southwark tube (and walkable from London Bridge), and was nice and quiet. TV in room, wi-fi as well but that cost (quite a bit) extra.

I would also recommend looking on www.laterooms.com, and www.lastminute.com for deals - but make sure to check on trip advisor for any horror stories! (Though there are always horror stories about every hotel, it seems, but you can pick through the more obviously insane ones.)

Thanks for those suggestions. I've been keeping an eye on trip advisor, but never thought to check lastminute.com and laterooms.com. I'll do so now!

Delighted to say that I've found somewhere that seems to have everything I want - the Rushmore Hotel, which is charging me £69 including breakfast, and with free internet. Yay!

I would say try the Ibis chain, but I'm at outs with them! OTOH reasonably priced (c. A$119 per night) and has all your requirements. As do Premier Travel Inns (I'm so sorry, I'm being idle and not linking), although I don't like them much as the one we stayed in you couldn't open the windows, the shower-heads were fixed to the wall so you couldn't wash your underneaths and they made you pay up-front as if they didn't trust you. Plus they served instant coffee at breakfast, which is unforgivable.

There are also various Best Westerns and Days Inns around; google "Cheap hotels in London" and I'm sure you'll find some good ones.

Even the boggest of bog-standard chain hotels have en suite and TV, but they don't all have Internet access, and if they do, you sometimes have to pay for it.

I had a look at an ibis near Earl's Court, but didn't have rooms available for the 7 nights I was there. I'll definitely take a look at the other suggestions you made though - thanks.

I hope we will have an opportunity to meet during your visit!

Sounds great! I'll be in London between June 29 and July 5, although some days will be spent in other places. If you're free then, we could definitely do coffee or lunch or something.

I should definitely be around then; message me on here nearer the time & I'll give you contact details, etc.

Depends how central you want to be too...as Annabel said, Ibis is usually ok. I stayed in a decent one right near Earls Court that was clean and good enough but work paid so I have no clue how much it cost. So really, that was no help at all!

I had a look at the ibis near Earls Court, but they are charging a bit more than I'd hoped to pay (101 pounds/night plus breakfast). Still, I might come back to them if I can't find anything better.

*hugs*

God, that is a bit much, isn't it...I really don't know what the general prices are like- well, because I live here I guess so don't need hotels!

I thought so, but I might end up having to pay that sort of amount if I can't find anything else. I'd just hoped for something in the 60-80 pound range. Still, if I do end up having to pay that sort of higher rate, I will. And that's the definite benefit of being a local! *lol*

Hooray! I have achieved my aim and will be staying at the Rushmore Hotel for £69 per night including breakfast and free Internet. Woo hoo!

Yay! I was waiting for 'God, you can't stay there, that's the makeshift brothel and the police are there five times a night'. *is relieved*

Well, I can't possibly keep track of all the makeshift brothels in London ;)
