Spoilers: Spoilers for The Stolen Earth.
Summary: The Doctor and Donna go back

“We’re not going anywhere near Torchwood – or Captain Jack.”

“Good to see that you’ve got a smile on your face. Is that jealousy again, Doctor?”

“Well, it’s only fair, if you get to be jealous of Professor River Song…”

“Oh, grow up! Honestly, you’re more than nine hundred years old, but sometimes it’s like dealing with a pre-pubescent teenager.”

“You know what I can’t wait to see? Your face when we finally do meet up with her.”

“Actually, I’ll be even more interested to see yours.”

“Useful to know.”

“I bet. Now, where – and when – are we?”

“We’re pulling the same stunt we did at the Library. We can’t afford for anyone to see or hear us here, or we’ll definitely screw up the timelines.”

“Fine with me. But could you answer the question?”

“I want to see what was going on with the Earth while we were busy with the Shadow Proclamation.”

“But the whole world would have been in meltdown because of the Daleks. How can you see all that at once?”

“Time machine, Donna, remember?”

“Fine then, smarty, let’s get on with it.”

“Already here. Remember, though, nobody will hear you.”

“Yeah, thanks for the warning. That’s to stop me calling out to Gramps, is it?”

“Pretty much, yes. He’s quite a character, your grandfather. Not many other people would be out trying to stand up to the Daleks.”

“With a – what is that? A paintball gun! Oh, fat lot of good that’s going to do. I can’t watch!”

“Donna, he can’t – Rose!”

“What? Where – oh, my God! She saved him!”

“Yeah, she would. My Rose.”

“Oi, Spaceman! Focus!”

“Sorry. Come on, let’s see what they’re going to do.”

“Can we go inside?”

“’Course we can. Walk through the wall.”

“Okay, that’s just bizarre.”

“Just don’t try to be a poltergeist or anything. It won’t work.”

“You’ve tried, haven’t you?”

“Well, once or twice. Got to have a laugh sometimes. Ooh, what are they up to? And is that – Harriet Jones! It is!”

“The subwave network.”

“Harriet gave her life. Rose said so.”

“Now, let's see if we can talk to each other.”

“And she came up with that herself? She was amazing.”

“Yes, she was. I underestimated her. Well, sort of. She really did want to help.”

“This, ladies and gentlemen… this is the Subwave Network. A sentient piece of software. Programmed to seek out anyone and everyone who can help to contact the Doctor.”

“She always knew how important you were.”

“She went about things the wrong way.”

“She did what she thought was best. Doctor, you saw that alternative world, what it was like without you. How else were we meant to manage?”

“There are other ways than blowing people up. Even Sycorax.”

“What, like drowning them?”

“That’s not fair!”

“How is it any different, Doctor? You know about the dangers and how to deal with them, but the people of Earth don’t.”

“She’s dealt with Slitheen…”

“Destroyed them with a missile, if your memory of events is anything to go by. And wasn’t it you who told her to?”

“She’s the one who told me to do it.”

“She didn’t even know what it was. She believed you when you said you knew how to save everyone.”

“Oh excuse me, Harriet, but, well, the thing is, if you're looking for the Doctor... didn't he depose you?”

“He did. And I've wondered about that for a long time. Whether I was wrong. But I stand by my actions, to this day. Because I knew. I knew that one day, the Earth would be in danger, and the Doctor would fail to appear. I told him so myself. And he didn't listen.”

“I really hate it when you’re right, Donna.”

“No, you hate it when you’re wrong.”

“That, too.”

“They’re the reason we found the Earth. All these people who believe in you. Who know how terrible life can be without you. If that’s the sort of army you inspire, I’m proud to be part of it. To have been.”

“People die for me.”

“And people live because of you. Why are you letting that vermin’s words affect you like this? You saw what happened, what we did in spite of him – perhaps because of him. Oi, air!”

“Oh, Donna Noble, you’re incredible. You really are. Come on then, let’s go to the Crucible. I want to see you at your best.”

Oh me too!

Wonderful, of course :)

*wail* NO, I CAN'T READ THAT LINE WITHOUT CRYING. Well, without sniffling a little. :'(

Though i do like this chapter. Muchly.

(Sorry for the comment spam, Clare - it was easier for my sleep-deprived brain to to reply than try and quote that line myself)

Aw, I'm sorry, hun! I didn't mean to make you cry! And perhaps you ought to trust me...

I do trust you! Implicitly. It's just that line. She was so brilliant, and then so... mind raped. Stupid RTD-man. *grumbles*

Dear God, if you're unhappy with that one, I'll definitely have to put a tissue warning on my current fic!

*scurries off to add it*

LOL. I'm very touchy about TSE/JE still. Probably because i'm an emotional sap, but anyway. *prepares Kleenex*

Right, big tissue warning added. Probably a good idea. Or maybe you should just avoid my next fic altogether...

Err, wait. You mean the one that's not part 14 of this, don't you? *hides* If you weren't so brilliant, i would. Let me read the summary. If i think it's too depressing, i'll bookmark it and surprise you with a comment in a year's time.

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 07:47am on 07/03/2009
Yep, I mean the brand new one. Trust me, you really do want to read part 14 of this because it's very cheery.

I won't give you the summary, but I will give you the tagline: 'Donna wakes up to find herself in a world that is much too familiar.'

Oh but that sounds promising! I can deal with a certain amount of angst... provided there's an exceedingly happy ending involved. I've had to bookmark so many fics that are post-JE with angst because i just can't bring myself to click the cut. *is pathetic ball of misery still*

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 07:53am on 07/03/2009
Hee, I can promise it's been very good to write. I don't think I've got as much satisfaction out of any fics since I wrote "She Never Really Forgot". Is that any more tempting?

Oooh. Yes, very.

This is not helping me write "For Better or For Worse" though. *kicks unhelpful fic* Why is reading ever so much more entertaining than writing?

Aw, I'm sorry! And I think it's because it's a relief from the pressure of having to create something new.

*giggle* Not your fault. It's the lure of CT/DT rpf. *is going to hell in a handbasket*

That could be it. And the fact that after all the word limits from the past three years, i don't really want to write anything just yet.

How's your thesis going incidentally? Mine's been shoved into a corner for a week.

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 09:12pm on 07/03/2009
*is definitely in handbasket with you*

I had that feeling about 6 months ago. Now that most of my work is reading, I want to write other things.

My thesis is back on track for now. One supervisor is on annual leave, but I have a meeting with the other in a couple of weeks so I've got to get notes and things for her this week.

*starts hunt for your motivation*

Ah, love Harriet Jones. The Doctor was wrong about her.

Yay for another chapter, but boo for it being the next-to-last-one!

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 10:37pm on 06/03/2009
Yup, Harriet Jones was definitely excellent.

And I'm sorry it's the next-to-last, but I can only work with the episodes I was given...

Ah, it's all RTD's fault!!

*shakes fist in his general direction*

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 10:43pm on 06/03/2009
Yes. Yes, it is.

*promises an ending better than the one RTD gave us*

Why does "at your best" make me want to cry? I swear it's not hormones! It's all just so...good!

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 10:37pm on 06/03/2009
It's okay, it gets me a bit, too. Perhaps because of just how wonderful she was in that scene?

“And people live because of you. Why are you letting that vermin’s words affect you like this? You saw what happened, what we did in spite of him – perhaps because of him. Oi, air!”

The Doctor has to remember the good bits too. People may die for him but it is usually doing something they think is right, something they learned from the Doctor.

Boo, as well, for the next chapter being the last.
I have enjoyed the ride immensely.

Yes, he certainly does and not doing that is one of his failings.

I'm sorry we're so close to the end, but you really have to blame the BBC for making such a relatively short series...

cant believe there's one more left =/ oh well itll be great, i know it! Donna at her best indeed, but she's always at her best IMO =D

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 11:49pm on 06/03/2009
Yes, she is always amazing. And I'm sorry I couldn't extend this, but there's the little problem of no more source material...

posted by [identity profile] loves-glamour.livejournal.com at 03:54am on 07/03/2009
yea stupid RTD! ok sorry i shouldnt say that..but he really screwed Donna's ending up, its so depressing..thank god you fixed it with your fics =D

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 05:36am on 07/03/2009
Oh, he absolutely did! And that's why I love to write fixits. *may perhaps have another one underway*

posted by [identity profile] vickysg1.livejournal.com at 07:33am on 07/03/2009
Yeah! Perfect part to come to. I like them talking about Harriet's action, and the Doctor's too.

Oi, air!
He should stop crushing her against him every single time. One day, she'll retaliate! lol

posted by [identity profile] katherine-b.livejournal.com at 07:35am on 07/03/2009
*lol* Yes, he really should! But they were quite a huggy pair.

Don't worry, that took me a while as well. When I saw the episode, the name kept circling in my head for ages, but it wasn't until I saw VotD that it finally made sense.

And I felt very silly...

“Just don’t try to be a poltergeist or anything. It won’t work.”

“You’ve tried, haven’t you?”

This made me laugh so much! Of course he tried!

A jealous Doctor is always fun... And it's more fun when it's over Donna. ;P

I always wanted him to face the realization that in deposing Harriet Jones, he might have enabled the Master to take control. Too bad we couldn't have that here...

And here we go... Off to the final part...
