The Waters of Mars transcript - Part I

And here we go again! To complete my trilogy of specials, along with The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead, here is The Waters of Mars. Like last time, I have included a lot of pictures in this, so it’s really not dial-up friendly. Thanks to Sonic Biro for their unwitting assistance. And if you see an error, please let me know.

As ever, I have made up a handy-dandy easy reference list of acronyms:
D – Doctor
AB – Adelaide Brooke
EB – Emily Brooke
YK – Yuri Kerenski
EG – Ed Gold
MB – Mia Bennett
TI – Tarak Ital
SE – Steffi Ehrlich
RG: Roman Groom
MC – Maggie Cain
AS – Andy Stone
G – Gadget

[Static on screen clears to an image of a young woman holding a baby. This is Emily Brooke, daughter of Adelaide. The baby is Susan Brooke, granddaughter of Adelaide.]

EB: Hi Mum! [looking at baby] Susie says hello, don’t you sweetheart? [makes baby Susan wave a hand] That’s it, give a little wave.

[Our first glimpse of Adelaide Brooke, who smiles at the gesture. Throughout this, Adelaide is shown to be sitting in front of a bank of monitors, one showing her family and the others acting as security camera screens or reporting various technical stats.]

title or description

EB: Oh, what was I going to say? Um, Uncle Sim called in. He says hello. He keeps saying ‘you must be missing her’ and I said ‘She’s been gone for over two years now. I’m getting used to it. Um…

[Static blurs the screen.]

EB [technical interference]: Um, it’s breaking up, it must be the solar flares.

AB [a bit impatient]: Talk faster!

EB: About the deposit on the house, um, I spoke to the bank…

[Screen fades to black. Adelaide tries to make an adjustment.

Outside on the rocky ground, the TARDIS materialises. The door opens and the Doctor steps out, wearing the same red/orange suit he wore in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit and 42.

D [happy, satisfied]: The red planet!

title or description

[He is smiling and looking quite relaxed as he looks around.

An alarm sounds and a door opens. A man in a white space suit – Yuri Kerenski –steps out, carrying a device labelled ‘Bowie Base One’. He is smiling.]

EG Sun sets in ten minutes, Yuri. You’re gonna lose the light.

MB That’s it, got you on external ten.

[A young woman – Mia Bennett – is shown operating a computer. On the screen, Yuri can be seen as he puts down the device, breathing audibly.

YL: Almost there That’s done. Radial clamp down. [gives thumbs up to camera] One more thing.

EG [coldly and decisively]: Get. Back. In. Side. You’re using power and oxygen.

YK: Oh, hold on. [gets out ‘No trespassers’ sign and holds it up to camera] Get this on camera. [laughs] What do you think?

title or description

[Ed shakes his head in disgust.]

MB [smiling]: Hey, looks good. Nice one, Yuri.

EG [grim]: He wasted an entire solar panel just to make that.

YK [as Mia stifles a smile]: Oh, lighten up. It’s a joke!

EG [unhappy]: We come all this way, to an empty planet untouched by civilisation, and what do we do? Put up cheap jokes. [as Mia giggles] That’s not funny, that’s pollution.

AB: Having fun?

EG [annoyed]: I was just telling these…

AB: I’d expect better of you, Ed. Now get back to work, all of you.

[Ed looks cross and a bit hurt at the unreasonable accusation. Mia shoots him a sympathetic and slightly embarrassed smile and sidles past.

Elsewhere on Mars, the Doctor is looking around.]

D [smiling]: Oh, beautiful!

[Over his shoulder, we can see Bowie Base One, a series of four domes linked by tunnels to a central hub and with a rocket tower standing to one side.]

G [pushing probe into the Doctor’s back, speaking in a metallic, robotic voice]: Rotate. [as the Doctor raises his hands] Slowly. You are under arrest. For trespassing. Gadget-gadget.

[The Doctor is confronted with a white robot made up of tank-track feet, long arms and a head with a camera, giving it a somewhat Dalek-like appearance. It is pointing a gun at him. Its joints spark.]

title or description

[Opening credits]

[A gun is raised, glowing with blue light.]

AB [sternly]: State your name, rank and intention.

D [wary glance at the gun, which is pointed at him]: The Doctor. [pause] Doctor. [pause, then, almost sadly] Fun.

[A door bursts open and a man – Tarak Ital – runs along a raised hallway, breathless.]

TI: What the hell? [gets to doorway, where he can get a better look] It’s a man!

[The other crew members and the Doctor are in a white room with a dome in the ceiling that protrudes down to a computer station. The Doctor has his hands in his pockets and is watching Adelaide, who continues to point the gun at him.]

TI: A man on Mars! How?

[Steffi Ehrlich is holding the Doctor’s suit, which has been removed from him.]

SE [holds up suit with doubtful expression]: He was wearing this thing. I have never seen anything like this.

title or description

TI: What did mission control say?

SE: They’re out of range for ten hours with the solar flares.

AB: You could cut the chat everyone.

D: Actually, chat’s second on my list, the first being gun, pointed at my head. Which puts my head second and chat third, I think. Gun – head – chat, yeah. [shakes head] I hate lists. But you could hurt someone with that thing! Just put it down.

AB: Oh, you’d like that.

D: Can you find me someone who wouldn’t?

AB [suspicious]: Why should I trust you?

D [calmly]: Because I give you my word. And forty million miles away from home, my word is all you’ve got.

[There is a brief but silent battle of wills before Adelaide lowers the gun.]

AB: Keep Gadget covering him.

[There is a young man – Roman Groom – standing next to Gadget wearing silver gloves. He nods.]

title or description

G: Gadget-gadget.

D [glancing over his shoulder]: Oh, right, so you control that thing. Auto-glove response.

RG: You got it! [showing off] To the right [moves right hand and Gadget moves right]

G: Gadget-gadget.

RG: And to the left [moves left hand and Gadget moves left]

D [as Gadget shoots more sparks]: It’s a bit flimsy.

G: Gadget-gadget.

D [fed-up]: Does it have to keep saying that?

RG [unhappy]: I think it’s funny.

D [between clenched teeth]: I hate funny robots.

[A voice comes over the speaker. This is Maggie Cain.]

MC: Excuse me boss. Computer log shows we’ve got an extra person on site. How’s that possible?

title or description

[Maggie is shown to be in a greenhouse-type environment.]

AB: Keep the bio-dome closed. And when using open comms, you call me Captain.

[The Doctor looks mildly impressed by Adelaide’s take-charge attitude.]

MC: Yeah, but who is it?

[Maggie hears feedback and shrugs. She turns to the other person in the bio-dome.]

MC: Disconnected. She’s cut me off, can you believe her? She’s like we’re just… gardeners.

[We see that the person she was speaking to is Andy Stone, who is shovelling compost into a container, suggesting that Maggie’s comment may not be too far from the truth.]

AS: As long as they leave us alone, that’s fine with me.

[Maggie scans a tree as Andy begins digging.]

AS: Oh, you beauties!

[He pulls some clean carrots out of the soil.]

title or description

AS: Look at this!

MC [smiling]: Better start planting some more if there’s an extra mouth to feed.

AS [gleeful as he washes the carrots]: The very first garden off Earth, everything brand new. Eden, that’s what we should have called this place. [bites the end off one of the carrots]

MC [thoughtful, as she continues to scan plants]: It’s the Philippines, I’ll bet. If there’s someone else on Mars, it’s got to be the Philippines. [Andy suddenly stiffens] All those stories about them building a rocket! Adelaide’s gonna love that! Stealing her thunder.

[In the background, Andy is starting to twitch and shake with increasing violence.]

MC: Mind you, worth it to see her face! Or it could be the Spanish. [Andy goes terrifyingly still] They kept that Spacelink project under wraps. [turns to Andy] Didn’t your sister work for them?

[Andy is on his knees, completely still, facing away from Maggie. She walks towards him.]

MC: Are you all right, mate? [tense music begins] Come on, stop mucking about. [pause] Andy. [looking worried] Are you okay?

title or description

[Andy suddenly turns around. His face has changed. His mouth cracked, chapped and blackened. There are marks and scars on his forehead, extending up along his cheeks and down his neck, possibly everywhere on his body. His eyes are very light in colour, apart from black pupils, and water is running out of his mouth.

Maggie screams.]

EG: It can’t be a wild state flight because we’d know about it. Therefore it’s got to be one of the independents, yeah?

[The Doctor is standing with his arms folded over his chest as Adelaide faces him and Ed walks around him. He sighs deeply and rolls his eyes as Ed continues to speak.]

EG: Was it the Branson Inheritance fund? They’ve been talking about a Mars shot for years.

D [impatient, turning to face him]: Right, yeah, okay, you got me. So, I’m the Doctor. And you are?

AB [abruptly]: Oh, come on! We’re the first off-world colonists in history! Everyone on planet Earth knows who we are.

D [growing realisation]: The first? [faintly] The very first humans on Mars? Then this is [in unison with Adelaide] Bowie Base One?

AB [nodding, in unison with the Doctor] Bowie Base One.

D [shocked]: Number one? Founded July 1st 2058. Bowie Base One in the Gusev Crater.

[The Doctor has a flash to what looks like an online newspaper article with the headline ‘Human Race Celebrates Mars Colony: The Red Planet – Home Sweet Home.’ The Doctor looks from person to person, concern in his eyes.]

title or description

D: You’ve been here how long?

AB: Seventeen months.

D [frightened]: 2059? [lightly] It’s 2059 right now?

[Another flash to a newspaper article – ‘Captain Adelaide Brooke: Mars Mission Launched.’]

title or description

D [moment of realisation]: Oh! My head is so stupid! You’re Captain Adelaide Brooke!

[Another newspaper article – an Obituary for Captain Adelaide Brooke, with her date of death given as 2059.]

title or description

D [turns to Ed, who frowns]: And Ed! You’re deputy Edward Gold!

[Another Obituary, this time for Ed Gold, with the year of death also listed as 2059.]

title or description

D [gesturing]: Tarak Ital, M.D.

[Tarak’s Obituary – year of death 2059.]

title or description

D [pointing]: Nurse Yuri Kerenski.

[Next verse, same as the first.]

title or description

D: Senior Technician Steffi Ehrlich.

[And again.]

title or description

D: Junior technician Roman Groom.

[Him too.]

title or description

D: Geologist Mia Bennett.

[Yup.]

title or description

D [sadly]: You’re only 27 years old.

[Mia frowns, worried.]

AB: As I said, Doctor, everyone knows our names.

D: Oh, they’ll never forget them.

[Picture of an explosion and a shot of a small object closing in on a planet.]

D [worried]: What’s the date [pause] today? What is it? The exact date?

AB [sternly]: November 21st. 2059.

[The Doctor looks horrified. Flash to another article – ‘Mars Disaster: Bowie Base One destroyed. World in mourning. Nuclear blast crater. November 21 2059.’]

title or description

D [nodding, brisk]: Right! [faint] Fine.

SE: Is there something wrong?

MB [uncomfortable]: What’s so important about my age?

D [nodding again]: I should… go. I really should go.

[He steps away and Adelaide and the others turn to face him.]

title or description

D: I’m sorry. I’m… I’m sorry with all of my hearts. But it’s one of those very rare times when I’ve got no choice.

[His face is twisted in pain and we flash to the most recent article about the disaster.]

D [shaking his head]: It’s been an honour!

[He goes around to shake everyone’s hands.]

D: Seriously, a very great honour to meet you all. The Martian pioneers. Oh, thank you!

[He can’t shake Roman’s hand as he’s still wearing the silver gloves. Roman holds up a hand in reminder, so the Doctor taps Gadget instead.]

G: Gadget-gadget.

[The Doctor gets to Adelaide and salutes.]

D: Thank you! [stops in doorway] Where’s the other two? Hold on – Margaret Cain and Andrew Stone?

[Flash to Obituaries of Maggie and Andy with the year of death listed as 2059.]

title or description

title or description

EG [using comms.]: Maggie, if you want to meet the only new human being you’re going to see in the next five years, better come take a look.

[Instead of Maggie responding, there’s a low, animalistic growl from the speaker. Everyone looks unsettled.]

MB: What was that?

D [soft, uncomfortable]: Oh, I really should go!

[However he doesn’t attempt to leave.]

EG: This is central. Bio-dome report immediately.

AB [sitting at the computer]: Show me the bio-dome.

[Ed scans through images on the security footage until he gets to the bio-dome. Only static appears on the screen.]

EG: Oh, cameras are down.

AB [tense]: Show me the exterior.

[Ed drops into a chair and starts manipulating controls. The bio-dome – one of the domes the Doctor saw when he viewed Bowie Base One previously – is gradually going dark as the lights are switched off. It finally goes dark altogether.]

AB: I’m going over. [turns to the Doctor] Doctor, with me!

D: Yeah, I’m sorry. Um, I – I’d love to help, but [he takes his suit from Steffi] I’m leaving. Right now.

title or description

AB: Take his space suit. Lock it up [as Steffi does so, to Doctor] This started as soon as you arrived so you’re not going anywhere except with me.

[Ed glances at the Doctor, who looks uncomfortable.

The Doctor, Adelaide and Tarak walk along the dark hallway with Gadget, lighting it with hand-held torches. The Doctor is keeping his hands behind his back.]

G: Gadget-gadget.

AB: What’s so important about Mia’s age? You said she’s only 27. What does that matter? What did you mean?

D [shaking his head, trying to be dismissive]: Oh, I just opened my mouth and words came out. They never make much sense.

TI: You’re telling me.

D [pause]: Thank you, doctor.

TI: Anytime. Doctor.

G: Gadget-gadget.

D [looking back]: I hate robots. Did I say?

RG [manipulating hands, unhappy]: Yeah, and he’s not too fond of you! What’s wrong with robots?

D: It’s not the robot; it’s just the people. Dressing them up, giving them silly voices, like you’re reducing them.

RG [sarcastic]: Yeah, friend of mine, she made her domestic robot look like a dog.

D [shrug]: Oh, well, dogs! That’s different.

RG: But I adapted Gadget out of the worker drones. Those things are huge. They built this place when the shell was lowered down from orbit. Got a strength capacity of fifteen tonnes…

AB [interrupting]: This channel is open for essential communications only.

RG [annoyed]: Sorry. [softly] Love those drones.

D: I’ve read all that stuff about you, Captain Adelaide. The one thing they never said – was it worth it? The mission?

AB [glancing at him]: We’ve got excellent results from the soil analysis.

D: No, but all of it! ‘Cos they say you sacrificed everything. Devoted your whole life to get here.

AB [quiet]: It’s been chaos back home. Forty long years. The climate, the ozone, the oil apocalypse. We almost reached extinction. And to fly above that… To stand on a world with no smoke – where the only straight line is the sunlight – yes, it’s worth it.

D [smiling]: Ah, that’s the Adelaide Brooke I always wanted to meet. The woman with starlight in her soul.

[Adelaide stares straight ahead, not acknowledging this, although there may be tears in her eyes. However she is quickly distracted by something ahead of them.]

AB: What’s that?

[They run up to a body lying on the ground. It’s Maggie, unconscious.]

AB: It’s Maggie!

D: Don’t touch her!

TI: I know the procedure! [leaning over her, speaking softly as he pulls on rubber gloves] Maggie, can you hear me? It’s Tarak. Maggie… [rolls her over onto her back] It’s okay. She’s still breathing.

title or description

[The Doctor looks up along the darkened hallway, lit only by dim emergency lights.]

TI: She’s alive!

[He pulls out his comms device.]

TI: Yuri, I’ve got Margaret Caine. Head trauma. I need a full med pack.

YK [grabbing a white padded bag]: I’ve got it! Med pack on its way.

EG: I’m going to help!

SE [leaping up from her seat at the computer]: In the absence of the captain, you’re in charge, sir! You’ve got to stay in the dome!

[Ed and Yuri run down the corridor carrying the med pack and white stretcher.]

D [arms folded]: Don’t touch her, use the gloves!

TI [leaning over Maggie]: Do what he says. Get her to sick bay. [looks up] Put her in isolation.

AB: We’re going on to the bio-dome. Tarak, with me. Yuri can take care of her. Ed, go back. Gadget, stand guard. Keen an eye on this area.

G: Gadget-gadget.

EG: Captain, you’re going to need me. [Adelaide sighs deeply] Andy’s the only other crew member out here. And if that wasn’t an accident [Yuri looks up, startled] then he’s gone wild.

AB [tense]: You’ve deserted your post. Consider that an official warning. Now get back to work. Doctor!

[The Doctor glances at Ed for a moment, understanding the underlying tension, raising an eyebrow at Ed before following Adelaide.

Steffi is listening to the bestial growls coming from the bio-dome, her fingers stroking the screen, revealing her tension. The computer scans the sound, identifying it as coming from Andy. Steffi and Mia exchange worried looks.]

SE [using comm.]: Captain, that sound we heard from the bio-dome – I’ve run it through diagnostics. According to the computer, it’s… Andy.

[The Doctor, Tarak and Adelaide are standing in an airlock.]

title or description

SE: It registers as the voiceprint of Andy Stone.

AB: Understood. Double-check thanks.

TI [working at computer]: Air-pressure stabilised.

[The door into the bio-dome is opened. Adelaide steps out, followed by the Doctor and then Tarak. They use torches to light the room.]

AB: Andrew? Andrew Stone? It’s Captain Brooke. Andy, report. I need to see you. Where are you?

[The Doctor goes to the computer and begins to work on it with the sonic screwdriver to get the lights back on. The room lights up.]

D: There you go.

AB: What’s that device?

D [holding it up]: Screwdriver.

title or description

AB [dismissive]: Are you the Doctor or the janitor?

D: I don’t know, sounds like me. [smiles] Maintenance man of the universe.

AB: You stay with me. Don’t step out of my sight. Tarak [turning to him] go to external door south. Make sure it’s intact.

TI: Yes, ma’am.

D [walking over to racks of banksias and other plants]: Quite an achievement. First flower on Mars in 10,000 years. And you’re growing veg!

AB [dismissive]: It's that lot. They're already planning Christmas dinner. Last year it was dehydrated protein. This year – the real thing.

D: Still, fair enough. Christmas.

AB: If you must.

[They exchange smiles as a bird tweets somewhere overhead.]

D [turning to look at a robin]: You’ve got birds!

title or description

AB: Part of the project. Keep the insect population down.

D: Good sign.

AB: In what way?

D: Well, they’re still alive.

YK: [over comm.]: Captain, good news. It’s Maggie. She’s awake. She’s back with us.

[Behind him, in the infirmary, Maggie is getting up off the bed, wincing with pain.]

YK: Hey, how are you soldier? Just take it easy. Can you remember what happened?

MC [looking dazed]: I was just… working. Then I woke – woke up here.

AB [over comm.]: What about Andy? We can’t find him. Is he all right?

MC: I don’t know. I just…

AB: If you remember anything, let me know straight away.

EG [in control room]: Yuri, does she know how she ended up in the tunnel?

AB [grim]: And keep the comms clear! Everything goes through me. Got that?

[Ed sighs and looks down, frustrated. Maggie gets off the bed and walks over to the glass keeping her isolated.]

MC: Come on, just let me out of here. I’m fine! I’m just groggy.

YK [turning from computer, smiling]: You know the rules. 24 hours.

[He turns back to the computer and Maggie’s face drops.

title or description

In the bio-dome, Tarak is still looking for Andy as birds tweet with increasing volume.]

TI: Andy? Andy! Andy! [a sound makes him look to the side and he sees a form in silhouette] There you are!

[A trickling sound becomes very clear.]

TI: You all right?

[Andy, facing away from Tarak, is soaking from head to foot. His hands are dripping water. His clothes are drenched, as if he was standing under a shower. Tarak approaches warily.]

TI: Andy?

[Tarak focuses on the water pouring from Andy’s hands.]

TI: Andrew! Look at me!

[Andrew turns with a roar, water splashing onto the camera.

Yuri is watching a film of his brother Mikhail speaking in Russia. He chuckles.]

MC: Is that your brother?

YK: It’s only a repeat. The solar flares are still up. [turns to Maggie and is clearly worried by her appearance] Are you okay?

MC [bit breathless, managing a smile]: Yeah, just… you know…

[Yuri nods and turns back to the computer, smiling and chuckling as he shakes his head.]

YK: He makes me laugh. It’s his husband. [Maggie’s head drops] He spends money like – an idiot! [Maggie begins to twitch] Last year for Mikhail’s birthday, he said don’t buy me anything. Let’s, um, save money! George says ‘fine, okay’. His birthday comes around and it turns out George has bought him a car. [Maggie goes still, her head hanging down.] Top of the range. [Yuri chuckles] And the thing is, he’s used Mikhail’s credit card, so Mik’s saying ‘that means I bought it myself.’ George says ‘it’s the thought that counts!’

[Maggie’s head snaps up, flinging her hair back over her shoulder. Her mouth is paler than it was, even though the image of her is blurry.]

MC: Where does he live?

YK: Oh, just outside Dagestan.

MC: Where’s that?

YK: Oh, the Caspian Sea. Here you go.

[He brings up a map of the area to show her.]

MC [longing]: By the sea…

YK: Well, technically it’s more of a lake.

[Maggie is beginning to drip like Andy did.]

MC [somewhat robotically]: Earth has so much water.

YK [brings up image of Earth, showing huge oceans, sighing]: Yeah, just look at her. Forty million miles away.

MC: But it has so much beauty. [voice becomes robotic and somewhat masculine] We should like that world.

[Yuri frowns at the strange response and turns to face her for the first time. His eyes widen at her broken, cracked face and blackened mouth. Unlike Andy, however, Maggie’s eyes are not white, but remain dark.]

title or description

YK: This is sick bay. We have a situation! Maggie’s condition has – I don’t know! I don’t know what it is! [as water runs from her mouth, and she gives a malevolent smile] It’s – it’s water, just – pouring out!

AB: Yuri, calm down. Just tell me what’s happened to her.

YK: The skin is… sort of broken around the mouth. And she’s exuding water – like she’s drowning!

AB: Tarak, this area’s unsafe, we’re going back. Tarak! [shouting] Tarak!

D [urgently]: Where was he?

[They begin to run back through the bio-dome.]

EG: Yuri, keep her contained. Seal the door at maximum. I’m on my way!

[Adelaide and the Doctor are running through the bio-dome when Adelaide spots something. She stops and he comes back to join her. They can see Andy standing as Tarak kneels in front of him. Andy’s hand is pressed to Tarak’s forehead. Tarak is twitching and pouring water. The Doctor shines light on them.]

title or description

D [soft, hesitant]: Andy? Just leave him alone.

AB [pulling out her gun]: Step away from him officer, that’s an order. As the captain of this group, I order you – don’t!

D [at the same time, putting out a hand to stop her shooting]: I can help, I promise! I can help! Just leave that man alone. Andy, I’m asking you - take your hand away from him and listen to me.

[They both fall silent as Andy turns towards them, his eyes wide and staring. He sprays a fine mist of water from his mouth. He lifts his hand of Tarak, who slumps back.]

D [quietly, glancing from Andy to Adelaide]: There now, that’s better, hmm? So, you must be Andy. Hello.

[Tarak straightens and turns towards them. His mouth and face have also been changed, and, like Andy, he has white eyes.]

D [into Adelaide’s ear]: We’ve got to go.

[They both run, with Andy and Tarak chasing them through the bio-dome. Finally they reach the door and get it open.]

D: Set the seal to maximum!

[As the Doctor pulls the door shut, Andy raises his arm and shoots a stream of water at the sealed door. The Doctor ducks back from the water with a grunt, almost colliding with Adelaide. They stare as Andy approaches the glass and slams his face against it.

title or description

Ed bursts into the infirmary as Maggie slams her hand, oozing water, against the glass keeping her isolated. She stares at him, her head wavering from side to side. For a moment, it looks as if she's trying to bite through the glass.]

Ed [whisper]: What the hell?

MB: It’s not Maggie. What happened to her? Yuri – what is she?

SE: Captain, we need you back here.

AB: Just tell me that Maggie is contained. Can you confirm it?

EG: Confirmed. She’s locked in.

AB: Keep surveillance 'till I get back. And close down all water supplies. All pipes and outlets. Don’t consume anything. Have you got that – everyone? That’s an order. Don’t drink the water. Don’t even touch it. Not one drop.

[The Doctor is watching Andy, who is staring in at him through the window as if trying to find a way inside.]

D: Can you talk? Human beings are sixty per cent water, which makes them the perfect host.

AB: What for?

D [softly]: Don’t know. I never will. Because I’ve got to go. Whatever’s started here, I can’t see it to the end. I can’t.

[Andy slams himself physically against the door. The Doctor jumps back and Adelaide starts violently. Tarak comes to help, spraying water against the seal.]

D: This thing’s airtight, yeah?

AB: And therefore watertight.

D: Depends how clever the water is.

[The lock suddenly sparks.]

AB: It’s fusing the system.

D: Abandon ship!

[They dash to the door that leads to the hallway back to the core and run. Andy and Tarak manage to fuse the lock and the two men are able to escape to chase them. The Doctor stops suddenly beside Gadget and pulls out the sonic screwdriver.]

AB: Doctor, we haven’t got time!

D [glancing at her]: They can run faster than us. We need a lift.

RG [starts backwards as he receives an electric shock]: Hey!

G: Gadget-gadget.

[Roman is thrown to his feet and begins to shake as he is electrocuted.]

D: Get on behind me

AB: That thing goes at two miles an hour!

D: Not anymore. [with patented ‘yes, I really can save you’ expression] Trust me.

[She leaps up behind him and the Doctor applies the sonic again.]

D: Ready gadget?

G: Gadget-gadget.

[Flames pour out the back of Gadget. Roman leaps up and down as if someone is running 10,000 volts through him, which, in effect, they are.]

title or description

RG: Waaaaah!

[Gadget takes off, leaving twin streams of fire behind. Andy and Tarak try to keep up. The Doctor’s expression is one of grim determination as Adelaide hangs on behind him. Roman all but collapses when they finally reach the end of the long passage.]

AB: The central dome airlocks have got Hardinger seals. There’s no way they can get in.

[She frantically unlocks the door. The Doctor holds it open for Gadget.]

D: Come on, come on!

G: Gadget-gadget.

D: Come on, come on, come on.

[Gadget begins clumsily moving towards the door.]

AB: I thought you hated robots!

D: I do!

title or description

[Gadget slides into the sealed room just ahead of Andy and Tarak, and the Doctor slams the door shut.

AB: We’re safe. It’s hermetically sealed; they can’t get in.

D [panting for breath]: Water is patient, Adelaide. Water just waits. It wears down the cliff tops, the mountains, the whole of the world, water always wins. Come on!

AB [on comms.]: The bio-dome tunnel is out of bounds. Andy and Tarak are infected. Repeat, infected. Make no contact. And if they make the slightest move, tell me. I’m going to the medical dome.

[Mia, Steffi and Roman watch blinking red dots on a screen that represent Andy and Tarak.]

D: Blimey, it’s a distance. You could do with bikes in this place.

AB: Every pound in weight equals three tones of fuel.

D: Yeah, I know, but… bikes!

[Adelaide looks at him as if he’s mad.]
