katherine_b: (Canon error apply fanfic)

With a quiet evening ahead, having gone out to dinner and my muse seeming to be a bit jetlagged, I thought I would tackle a couple of fic-writing memes that I've seen floating around.

So, nabbed from just about everyone:

How about a brief introduction?
Okay, I'm Katherine, sometimes known as KB. I'm 30 years old and I've been writing fic for almost a decade. So now I feel old - thank you!

Fabulous! And what got you into fanfiction to begin with?
I've always written stories about characters I know from books and media before I realised what fan fiction actually was. I co-wrote a sequel to Pride & Prejudice in the late 1990s following the BBC mini-series. I fumbled onto the Internet a few years later and also fell in love with a series called The Pretender. I wrote my first fic for that in about 1999. It all kind of snowballed after that...

I see. So what kind of fanfiction do you like to write?
Golly, I've tried a lot! Scripts and poetry and drabbles and sagas and everything!

Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the aspects of writing you struggle most with?
Sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's hard. Sometimes my muse vanishes (like right now, for instance) and sometimes I can't get it to shut up! And I'm wondering if I accidentally on purpose left Mabel, my plot bunny, back in London. Oh well, she'll get here eventually...

Are there any fanfiction clichés or trends you're sick of or just can't stand?
What do I hate? Mary Sues and hugely out-of-character stories - which generally amount to much the same thing. I'm not a fan of dark fics or of RPF, and I really hate mpreg.

Are you guilty of any fanfiction clichés you hate? Or any other ones?
Oh, dear God, what haven't I done? Mary Sues by the gallon, song fics - you name the sin, I've committed it!

What was the first fandom you wrote for, and do you still like/participate in it?
Well, I didn't know P&P had a fandom, so I don't think that counts! My first real fandom was The Pretender, and I do still have some stories on the go. However I really don't know when I'll get them finished.

Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them that you love to write.
My current pairing is definitely Ten/Donna. I've almost always avoided romantic stories before now, but these two have taken hold of me like anything!

Do you read other people’s fanfic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Recently I've been reading much the same as I've been writing - Ten/Donna. However I will try a Rose or Martha fic or another Doctor if a story comes highly recommended.

Name one thing you'd LOVE to write, but have been too afraid or shy to do.
I used to have a list of these, but I've gradually ticked them off. I'll come back to this if I can think of anything.

Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
I like to think I can take proper criticism well. Useful tips and ideas. I've gone through a number of editing processes, so I'm not nearly as precious about my writing as I used to be.

When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
I tend to find a song that will prompt real creativity in a fic. Playing that when I get stuck often helps.

What inspires you?
Goodness, anything really! A face, a sign, a look, an action, a word - you name it!

Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and yourself as a writer?
Fan fiction has led me, amazingly, down the path of actual publication. It's also helped me make wonderful friends, has expanded my writing skills in a huge range of directions and has filled many an hour when I could have been more usefully occupied! ;-)

And second, borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] time_converges, because this sounds like fun:

Inspired by Doctor Who's "Turn Left:" Pick one of my stories and tell me a point in the tale that you'd change -- something tiny or big -- and I'll tell you how that one difference would have altered the course of the entire story.

Nothing's out of bounds. Tell me what you're thinking! My fics can be found here.
Mood:: 'tired' tired
