Chapter I
Ten fingers.
Ten toes.
Two hearts.
Deep brown eyes.
Tiny wisps of ginger hair.
The Doctor looks down at the tiny marvel of existence in his arms and then up at Donna, who is watching him with a smile on her face, her blue eyes glistening.
“I firmly believe,” she teases, blinking the tears away, “that this is the longest I’ve ever heard you silent, Spaceman.”
“She’s ours, Donna,” he breathes, almost disbelieving. “Our daughter.”
“God, I hope so,” she retorts, laughing outright. “Because if not, I’ve probably got quite a bit explaining to do.”
“What are we going to call her?” he asks suddenly.
“Oh, yes, we were going to decide that before we had to go and save Pagul from the Carrionites, weren’t we?” she reminisces. “Have you got any ideas?”
The mention of Carrionites sparks a memory and the Doctor smiles. “Elizabeth,” he suggests.
“Why?” Donna demands. “I thought you’d be keen on names like Rose or Sarah Jane or something. Where does ‘Elizabeth’ come into it?”
“Well,” he says with a grin, “you know that, at some point in my future, I do something to annoy Elizabeth the First, right?”
“Since I have your memories in my head, yes, I’m aware of that,” she admits. “So?”
“So,” the Doctor goes on, his grin becoming a little wicked, “I’m sure she won’t be nearly as angry with me – with both of us, because you’ll be there, too! – if she finds out that we named our daughter in her honour!”
