DW Fic - Revisiting the Past Part 11
Title: Revisiting the Past 11/14
Author:

Rating: PG
Spoilers: Spoilers for Midnight.
Summary: The Doctor and Donna go back
“Erm, Donna? Air?”
“Don’t make me laugh, Spaceman. Respiratory bypass, remember?”
“Doesn’t work forever. Actually, on second thoughts, it can last a bit longer.”
“Good.”
“Although I would have thought you’d want to hear my theory on Professor Song.”
“Is this a technique to distract us from where we are?”
“Honestly? Yes.”
“Okay, go for it. I’m listening.”
“I didn’t say to stop the hug though.”
“Better?”
“Mmm hmm.”
“Good. So – theory?”
“Oh, right. Well, I think she might belong to an alternate universe where you and I never got back together again.”
“Is that a genuine theory, or just one intended to make me feel better?”
“Erm, not sure yet.”
“But why would you tell her your name? Even I don’t know your name!”
“Because the situation in which it can be used is kind of complicated. I’ll tell you, though. Eventually.”
“Promise?”
“Absolutely. Cross my heart.”
“Hearts.”
“Yup, both of them.”
“As long as you don’t add the ‘hope to die’ bit at the end. But the thing I don’t get is, you’re absolutely paranoid about your name. You’re always talking about how powerful names are. So why not trust her with something a little less – oh, I don’t know – massive?”
“Because that’s the one thing that would make her trust me immediately – and it did. If I hadn’t trusted her, we would never have got out of the Library alive. I know that now, and so I’ll know it when I see her again.”
“And you gave her your sonic screwdriver?”
“Well, you’ve got that sonic pen, so you won’t need it.”
“I suppose…”
“Look at it this way, Donna, she didn’t just know my name, she knew your name. Your last name. We hadn’t said it around her and yet she knew it.”
“Maybe it was from the defeat of the Daleks.”
“Honestly? I can promise it wasn’t. I’ve been around the Universe since that happened, in the time before you came back to me. People speak of the DoctorDonna – but never Donna Noble.”
“Maybe she went to – I don’t know – the Oodsphere or something.”
“They called you DoctorDonna there.”
“Fine – Messaline then.”
“Because there’s never been another Donna in the whole entire Universe.”
“Was that – my God, that was sarcasm! I didn’t think you could do sarcasm.”
“Molto bene.”
“And I didn’t think I’d hear you say that. Not here. Not again.”
“Just so long as you don’t repeat it after me.”
“That’s them, isn’t it? The peope who were on the bus with you? I can tell because they all look so guilty when they look at you.”
“Yes.”
“So, anyway, back to Professor River Song…”
“Now who’s doing the distracting?”
“I think you need it.”
“Maybe I do. You’re very good for me, Donna.”
“Likewise, Doctor. Hey, he’s watching us. That dark-haired boy.”
“Jethro.”
“Have we left already? The other us?”
“Yes. But they don’t know that.”
“That wasn’t what I meant. I didn’t want them to go over to the other swimming pool and find us sitting there, too. Ooh, that got a smile. Well, half of one.”
“You really don’t trust me sometimes, do you?”
“Depends how important it is. Messing with the minds of those people – I could see you doing that.”
“Actually, I’d reckon it’s probably more likely to be something you’d do.”
“You’re probably right. You’d go for the cheap trick option.”
“Me? Nah! Too much effort.”
“You’ve never tried it on me.”
“Wouldn’t be much use now, would it? You’d know about it before I even tried with that Time Lord consciousness inside your head. The DoctorDonna.”
“You love saying that.”
“No, actually I love the fact that you are that. Even if I’m still not quite sure how it happened.”
“I wish I’d been the DoctorDonna when we were here last time. Then I would have known you’d needed me. In fact, bugger that, I wish I’d come with you instead of being selfish and staying by the pool.”
“I wish you had, too.”
“You know I’m never going to let you go anywhere on your own ever again.”
“What, you’re expecting me to argue? I don’t want you to!”
