I was in Asfordby this morning, searching for more Bruce-related graves. I was also really lucky, too. It was a small town and had only one church. What's more, the vicar was finishing with the mother's group and so she had a few minutes for me. She hunted through the records of the rambling graveyard and found the names I was looking for. However I also discovered there are rather a lot of Marriotts in Asfordby. Clearly members of my family generally live to a ripe old age. There are lots of people living into their sixties and seventies, which in the late 1700s and 1800s was astonishing.
After that, I headed in the direction of Warwick. Seeing a sign for Kenilworth Castle, I headed there instead. I've read abut this, of course, in relation to Elizabeth I and Robert Lord Dudley, but I hadn't expected a ruin to look as impressive as this did. It's really quite remarkable, even if the destruction of the building breaks my heart. I was particularly taken by the gardens, as I suppose I'm meant to be. They've put so much work into it that's wonderful. I feel as if they could have added a bit more to the audio guide, but overall it was a very impressive thing to see.
As I wanted to enjoy Kenilworth, I didn't rush off to go and see Warwick Castle. I'll do that tomorrow, along with Blenheim Palace. That will give me the time to spend in Oxford at the library for my thesis on Wednesday.
It turns out that, having trimmed things from my trip early on, I will have a few days in London. I'm very pleased about that actually!
