So many things are just too bloody them about this part. From his admitting to being a coward where Sylvia is concerned (no mother of a companion unnerved him more!) to his thinking she's trying to kill him with the baby things, to his being away when labor hits...
Thank goodness the Old Girl can take things into her own hands sometimes... Going to fetch Martha was a good idea! It'll be necessary soon enough!
